Startup Finance Stack

The integrated software and fintech layer venture-backed startups use to bank, spend, close their books, and file taxes - spanning business banking (Mercury), spend management (Ramp), close automation (Numeric), AI-native general ledger (Puzzle), outsourced bookkeeping and tax (Fondo), and agentic accounting for firms (Basis).

Our read

The startup finance stack replaced a five-vendor setup: a startup bank, a personally guaranteed card, QuickBooks or Xero, an expense tool and an outside CPA. Brex launched in 2018 and the category name is fragmented, with vendors saying 'finance stack' first and PitchBook formalizing 'CFO stack' in 2023. Our read is that the market splits by layer, with founder-facing banking and spend tools going free and self-serve while close and accounting tools sell to controllers. Newer entrants are rebuilding the ledger and close from scratch. We've audited ten companies here.
