Our read

AI coding assistants have been around longer than most people think. Kite was founded in 2014, but the category didn't get a mainstream name until GitHub called Copilot 'your AI pair programmer' in 2021. It's filled up fast since then. We count seven unicorns, and Microsoft, Amazon and Google have all entered with their own competing products. The name's still contested, with 'AI coding agents' and 'AI code editors' pulling against 'assistant.' That matters, because the product is moving from autocomplete toward agents that plan and make multi-file changes on their own. The complaint about older tools is that they lack codebase-wide context and produce code that needs heavy review. We've audited eight companies here.
